The Aran Islands…bikes, bunks, and beers.

7 07 2008

There are usually a few things that happen on every trip that are unexpected, unplanned, and totally unbelievable. My trip to the Aran Islands was just such a trip. A quick ferry boat ride from the city of Galway on Ireland’s West Coast, the Aran Islands offer a quaint and relaxing day of bike riding, photographs and throwing back a few pints at the local pub. We stayed at Mainistir House Hostel and ended the evening at a birthday party for one of the local kids being held at the other local pub, and the entire island was in attendance it seemed. Not once did we feel out of place or unwelcome. Drinks and cake were being passed around like we were family members. If you ever make the trek out to Ireland, you would be missing out if you didn’t take the time to drop in on the Aran Islands for a day or two.

I had heard about this from people who had visited Tokyo, but this is much more aggressive than I had pictured in my head.  I love how the passengers just line up and start laying shoulders into the people in front of them.

My friend was recently at San Jose State University for a seminar with the Accounting Society when she noticed a particularly avian shaped smudge on one of the classroom windows. Had she not taken this photo personally, I would have said it was photoshopped.
